The days before there were many resports of spouts and also this day there was a good chance spouts could form. So, together with ben Lankamp we went to Lake IJsselmeer, hoping to catch our first full grown waterspout!
We met Roy Keeris there and after about 15 minutes we saw our first waterspout! It was rather thin and due to low contrast hardly visible, but it was a spout. A more active storm was brewing to our north and this storm formed a brilliant wall cloud. It was very low based, showing the high humidity in the boundary layer. We decided to head somewhat further north and stopped at the dyke Lelystad-Enkhuizen. There we saw the birth of a full grown waterspout to our south! The vortex wasn't fully condensated, but rotation on the water surface was evident. There was even a ship nearby! It lasted for about 3 minutes and then it disspated as rain curtains occluded around the spout. About half an hour later another spout tried to form, but it didn't succeed. Later that afternoon Ben and I tried our luck in the province of Noord Holland, but besides heavy rain we didn't see anything. Overall it became a very succesful spout chase! Part of the VWK spout report (in Dutch): In de vroege ochtend werd al melding gemaakt van een waterhoos boven het IJsselmeer, daarna volgden meerdere meldingen, o.a. door. Bernard Hulshof, Ben Lankamp en Roy Keeris. Zij zagen tijdens hun chase vanaf de dijk Enkhuizen – Lelystad om 12.38 uur een waterhoos boven het IJsselmeer met een bijzonder brede doorsnede van minimaal 50 meter, waarbij een brede rotatie tot op het water zichtbaar was. Op de foto is helaas niet goed te zien dat een vrachtschip voorlangs voer om een goed beeld te krijgen van de breedte van de hoos. Op de foto is wel goed te zien dat de hoos nog niet voor de helft gecondenseerd is, terwijl de rotatie tot op het water zichtbaar is en zelfs opspattend water is te zien. De vraag die op dit moment gesteld wordt (n.a.v. eerder onderzoek in de VS) is of onvolledig ontwikkelde (water)hozen wel bestaan. Zodra een uitstulping zichtbaar wordt zou er altijd sprake zijn van een roterende vortex tot op het water/aardoppervlak en altijd sprake zijn van een volledig ontwikkelde (water)hoos voor zover dit de spout-achtigen betreft. De redactie heeft hier nog niet voldoende naar kunnen kijken en nog geen standpunt ingenomen. Vooralsnog blijft het onderscheid aanwezig. |
